Integrated solution for product selection and labelling in self-service sections

The customer needed a solution with which the consumer could select and label products from the self-service bakery section; furthermore, the solution had to be integrated into the existing furniture in the bakery section of their shops.

The Client:

Pingo Doce is a Portuguese brand belonging to the Jerónimo Martins group (with a presence in other countries such as Poland with the Bierdronka brand). It currently has 480 supermarkets and hypermarkets in Portugal, where it occupies the second place in the ranking of retail chains.

The Problem:

The customer needed a solution with which the consumer could select and label products from the self-service bakery section; furthermore, the solution had to be integrated into the existing furniture in the bakery section of their shops.

Until now, the client chose the product in the section, and when he/she arrived at the checkout the cashier identified the product and marked it on the POS; this was not an easy task and also caused errors and queues at the checkout. The cashier had to know and recognise all the products visually.

The Solution:

We tested diff erent solutions from our Dibal catalogue with the help of our portuguese distributor, and it was the modular scale without weighing that was the perfect fi t. A solution consisting of a PC + a 15” display + an autocutter linerless 3” label printer. We also contributed to the customisation of the application shown on the 15” vertical display in order to adapt it to the customer’s requirements. In this way Pingo Doce solved all their needs:  the client easily selects the chosen product on the display, prints the label and sticks it on the bag containing the product.

In addition, the system integrates perfectly with the existing shop fixtures and fittings.

With Dibal’s solution Pingo Doce off ers a more complete, practical and transparent service to the client, while avoiding queues and errors in stock and product identifi cation at the checkout counters. The chain has achieved greater effi ciency in shops with an innovative solution.

This new way of working in the bakery section has already been implemented in 11 of the chain’s shops so far this year, and the forecast is to end 2023 with the solution in a total of 90 shops; in addition, the possibility of implementing it in other sections such as the ready-to-go food section is also being studied.
